soft, soothing feel

Welcome to Anam Cara: Gaelic for soul friend, and our family home in Inverness for more than fifty years. I’m the third generation to look after it, and I’d love to share it with you.

It’s a quirky, homely sort of house, an eclectic mix of old Scotland with a few modern touches. Everyone who stays seems to notice the same thing: it has a calm, soothing feel. Come and make yourself at home.

The house

Room to settle in

A two-storey home that sleeps up to four. Two guest bedrooms, one with a queen bed and one with twin singles; a downstairs bathroom with a shower; a cosy living room with a fireplace and Sky TV; and a fully equipped sit-in kitchen. Wifi runs throughout, there’s a washing machine for longer stays, and free parking on a quiet cul-de-sac.

The heart of the house

A fully equipped sit-in kitchen: gas hob, oven, washing machine, and a table for four, with the window over the sink looking straight down the back garden. The bathroom is downstairs, with a walk-in shower, and linen and towels waiting for you.

Two bright rooms, sleep soundly

Upstairs are two light, quiet bedrooms: the queen room with plenty of wardrobe space, and the twin room with two single beds, ideal for friends or children. Both look out over the gardens and the trees of the cul-de-sac.

Outside

A garden, front and back

There’s a large garden at the front and the back: a good spot for a morning coffee or an evening dram. The Caledonian Canal, with its locks and swing bridges, is just round the corner and lovely for a morning walk.

The house is a short walk from the town centre, the railway station and Inverness Castle, and about fifteen minutes by car from the airport. Lidl, Co-op and Aldi are all within walking distance.

No. 1 — Lochs & glens

Gateway to the wild

Inverness opens onto the Cairngorms, the UK’s largest national park. Wander the forests of Craig Phadrig, take on Ben Wyvis just to the north, or drive twenty minutes to Loch Ness and Urquhart Castle, with the Culloden battlefield closer still.

No. 2 — Links golf

Spectacular rounds

For golfers there are world-class links on the doorstep, from Castle Stuart by the airport up the coast to Royal Dornoch. Pack the clubs; the twin room takes the blame for the early tee times.

No. 3 — Nights in town

Music & a dram

A fine café scene for slow lunches, and live Scottish music at MacGregor’s Bar or the multi-award-winning Hootananny. The Black Isle Bar pours local craft beer with wood-fired pizza, and a dram at The Malt Room is a must.

A key waits in the lock box; you’ll be sent the code. No set check-in time.

Take the morning gently; the house is yours until midday.

Provided and made up before you arrive.

A shoes-off house

Carpet throughout, very welcome after a hike. Slippers encouraged.

No smoking, no pets

The house stays fresh for everyone who follows you.

Children welcome

Very welcome indeed. The garden approves of them especially.

Cleaning included. Minimum stay of seven nights, with a discount for longer stays.

Three generations of welcome

Anam Cara has been in the family for three generations, and I’m the one looking after it now. I’m half Scottish, half Dutch, born in New York, and these days I split my time between the Netherlands, Scotland and India, where I work in learning and development. The house has always been a place that welcomes people, and I’m glad to keep that going.
